Jared's Law - Bill 89

Jared's Law (aka Bill 89 and previously Kevin's Law) is about not allowing custody or visitation rights to parents who have abused or are a danger to their children.

Quoted from the website:
"A bill that calls for an automatic coroner’s inquest when a child dies while in the care of a parent who is or has been the subject of a court access order or who has been convicted of a violent act.

Jared was brutally murdered by his father during an unsupervised access order even though his father had been convicted of a violent and vicious attack on his wife, Jared’s mother."

The Canadian Parliament has not added Bill 89 to the current bills under discussion.

I found a petition for this online which has more detail. 1892 signatures so far.

You will be pleased to know that amid much public pressure, Bill 89 was UNANIMOUSLY PASSED before Queen's Park on Tuesday Sept.26th, much to the relief of the Craven and Latimer families.

Julie and Jenny have publically lobbied through their grief to try and protect other children from suffering the same fate as their lost sons. With petition with over 60,000+ signatures from fellow Ontarians, "Jared's Law" sets a precendent for victim's rights.

However the fight is not over - until Bill 89 has been given Royal Ascent and is placed into the law books, it cannot help these families and others who continue to face inquests and visitation issues. PLEASE send a letter to your local MPP telling them you want Jared's Law in the books NOW!!

If you would like to know mroe about this law and the events leading up to its creation, please visit http://groups.msn.com/JaredsLaw or just type in Jared's Law into any search engine to find our MSN group. It's full of the legislation, news archives from March'06 and more.

Thanks soooo much for your support!! ~ A.
