First Commenter Club

First Commenter Club

I'm not sure if they mean the first commenter on every post but it's possible. Have a look at the First Commenter Club.

I also found the June Comment Challenge. But, as it is already halfway through June I don't think I can still have much hope of making 1000 comments by the end of June.

PodCasting WordPress

On my ever growing list of things to do. I want to learn more about podcasting. I seem to remember typing that here already, not so long ago. Anyway, still there.

I found a site that does a podcast about WordPress and blogging. Have not listened to it yet but the preview of links posted to the blog makes it sound good. Can't listen right now cause the Momborg (to borrow Claire's name for her Mother) is sleeping, trying to get rid of her cold.

I am even making a new tag for podcast on this blog. That gives me the hope I can find all the stuff I have bloggered about it when I actually do something about it. I do have a microphone, that's a start on the hardware. (Always be optimistic!)

Right On - Respect the Blog

I think everyone out there who blogs with passion and with creativity and with skill should speak up and declare themselves a Writer with a capital W. I think it's time that all bloggers, especially daddy and mommy bloggers (no, I don't resent that term - I embrace it) should demand the respect that their traffic, their influence and their talent commands.

Blog Friendly PR

I wasn't really looking for ads or trading ads, etc. Came across Blog Friendly PR on another blog. I signed up for WordGrrls. Will see how it goes. Does look interesting but I'm not keen on making posts to advertise anything. The sidebar is ad real estate, not my posts.I do have a soft spot for PR after taking a college course in PR and communications.

Do You Really Want a Personal Blog?

I posted this over on the CMF Ads forum. A response to someone who was interested in starting a personal blog but didnt' seem to really want to write too much about themselves or have a select group of the public masses read it. I'm sticking my comment in here cause later I will want to read it and remember I wrote about the nose picking thing a fourth time now. What a twit I am. :)

I read your first post and nothing else. My first thought was why do you want to do a personal blog? Seems you are all against the whole point of a personal blog. Plus you don't want one set of people to read it yet want to promote it to find readers. Which is it?

I've been keeping a personal blog since 1998. My current one started in 2004. It's freewriting. It's temper tantrums. It's rants and links you want to find later but forget all about and then realize they just didn't matter all that much anyway. I go for months without promoting my blog. I don't write it for anyone really so what does it matter who reads it. I don't even know why I read it some days. I've been through a divorce in my personal blog. I've been through immigration, toe lint, nose picking and the agonies of online dating. I've written about being very unhappy and I've written about the best days in my life. I write things I hope family don't read but still I post them, daring fate. If you can't write about all of that in your own slant what is the point? Stick to a topical/ niche blog.

I don't hide much about who I am. If you find yourself in Barrie, Ontario you can find me there. That is a real photo of me in this forum. If I looked like a movie star I'd plaster more of them around. Having a personal blog is liberating. I don't give my URL to anyone I know but they sometimes find it. Most of them are not Internet types so they read one post and wander off like cows grazing in a field.

I've had two online stalkers in the time I have been online. I have had my blog hacked once (mild stuff and once I changed the password it was over). I've had people go totally off their rockers when I posted about being Pagan and really go bonkers when I posted about being a Witch. Then I posted about picking my nose and I had tons of comments from people laughing along with me. That's what a personal blog is. Throw caution to the wind, sit back and laugh at yourself.

Do You Show Who You Are?

Your Online Identity... from Top Ten Blog Tips forums

This was my blab.
I do use my real name, first name. I started using the stick figure drawing... a few years ago I guess. I drew it myself so no one can say it's not uniquely me. I don't post a photo of myself. I know it's kind of silly but I like my looks (overall) and I don't intend to set myself up for bashing any more.

I guess the stick figure face is branding at this point. It's kind of cute and friendly.

I'm very much myself online. I think it is easier to be myself in my blogs. I tend to be too honest as it is just so much easier to be honest than try to remember what all the right games and lies are. I get fed up with that stuff. If I contradict myself in my opinions it's because I changed my mind and I've given myself the freedom to do that. I'm not suiting myself to a persona here but in the rest of my life I get stuck that way. I find travel is the best cure!

Bad Boy Memes

Ben has a post about memes. Ten reasons why memes are wicked and unwanted and undesirable. If memes were men we would all want one at this point. Isn't that kind of ironic?

I posted a comment sticking up for the lowly meme. Add your thoughts about the life of the meme to Ben's blog.

I do memes if they are interesting or if someone I regularly read tags me with one. I pass on most of them because they are repetitive. It's easy to jump all over memes and be part of the "in" crowd. But my blog is personal and having traffic is interesting but not the reason I keep a blog. I do a meme if I want to. Answering the questions are fun if you don't take them seriously. No one needs to know your first pet's name but you don't have to take it seriously and give a real answer. Instead of writing a pet's name write the name you called your last boyfriend when you played naughty games. That's far more fun than reading anything real or true.

I wrote a confession to being a nose picker once and had loads of comments, most laughing about my post. One posted about how unsanitary that is and blab, blab, blab. It didn't matter. The post was fun to write and it still gets traffic even though it's well buried in my archives now.

Last of all, you're making a mistake if you write a blog to please your readers. You lose something when you write for an audience. It's much more interesting to step inside a blog when someone is writing just to please themselves. You take more chances and are far more likely to be unique and original. Anything less is just following the crowd and then you're just one more blog in the swamp.

Blogger Backup

Found something new for backing up Blogger blogs: Blogger Backup. Will be giving it a try with Word Grrls later today/ tonight. The real challenge will be this blog which has far more content. A heavy duty job for any blog backup software.

I did use Getleft before and it seemed to work well, on this blog. I have not done it in awhile and never had an urgent need to test it. So far. Kind of good to know there is a backup plan though.

Meme about Blogging

1. How long have you been blogging?
Since sometime in 1998.

2. Any advice to beginners?
Keep it fun. If it begins to be a job you need to take some time off.

3. What are the good things blogging has brought to your life?
I've used it as a journal during some hard times. I have met a lot of people (even though it is just online) who I would not have met otherwise. I've also found new creative ideas and outlets, more all the time.

4. What would you consider the pitfalls?
The commercialness which started a few years ago and is building up like a giant puss-ball zit these days. I expect it will keep getting worse until someone finds the next great idea in spamming.

5. Tell us about your blog name. Ever think of changing it? If so, to what? Why?
That Grrl. It's had a few other names (I'd have to think really hard to remember them) but I don't think I would change is again now.

6. Knowing what you know now, was starting a blog a good thing for you? Why or why not?
I think it was a good thing. I love the creative aspect. I like seeing what I can do with my limited abilities in coding and graphics.

7. How do you think blogging, bloggers, or the blogosphere has changed since you started?
I started a long time ago. Things have changed in huge ways. I miss the old days when blogging was personal. I'm pretty sick of the commercial blogging stuff and the fast, fake friends in social network stuff now.

8. Ultimately, what would you like your blog to accomplish for you or others?
I don't have a plan with a lot of goals and accomplishments. I'd like others to find something interesting maybe even useful. Mostly I blog for myself. To stretch my creativity and give myself a place to write when I want to tell myself something.

I found this one on Sunday Stealing. It's from a couple of weeks ago.

What Kind of Blogger are You?

You Are a Life Blogger!

Your blog is the story of your life - a living diary.

If it happens, you blog it. And you make it as entertaining as possible.

You may be guilty of over-sharing a bit on your blog, but you can't help it.

Your life is truly an open book. Or in this case, an open blog!

Your Blogging Type is Artistic and Passionate

You see your blog as the ultimate personal expression - and work hard to make it great.

One moment you may be working on a new dramatic design for your blog...

And the next, you're passionately writing about your pet causes.

Your blog is very important - and you're careful about who you share it with.

Your Blog Should Be Purple

You're an expressive, offbeat blogger who tends to write about anything and everything.

You tend to set blogging trends, and you're the most likely to write your own meme or survey.

You are a bit distant though. Your blog is all about you - not what anyone else has to say.

Maurica had the first blogger type quiz. The rest I picked up while I was taking the first one.

Found the Comment Club

The Comment Club is a group I found through a link on The Homesteading Housewife. Not looking for new members, they stopped at 35. Part of a Mommy Blogger group so not really for everyone. But they decided 35 were enough in the group as it would be harder to keep up with a really large group.

My Blog is Missing Me

We get so wrapped up in making our blog, finding people to read it (to notice that we have a blog) and suddenly we realize we need to actually put something into the blog, content wise. When I was not involved with Entrecard I was writing in my blog more often. I want to get back to that. The real point of having the blog was the writing of it, the creating and publishing.

I miss myself in my blog. When I read the posts I'm not really there. Just lurking around and occasionally leaving a note. It's not easy to find some balance. The funny thing is that people who do read your blog want to read the blog with you in it. If you write for your readers it becomes predictable and ordinary.

So lets all work on bringing ourselves back into our blogs. If you spend time card dropping for Entrecard or working on other promotion games, let them be on the sidelines. Keep yourself in the front lines.

Happy blogging.

How to Really Make Money from Blogging?

In reply to Ben's post about money making online:

The click me ads are never going to make big money cause they have had their time and now it's gone. People don't even look at the ads any more. Sidebar content may as well not exist unless it is something personal. I do find people notice my flickr badge which shows photos I have taken. But, the rest of the stuff on my sidebar may as well just be there for me. Which, most of it is.

I used to think the best way to use the Internet was the traditional way, the Information highway. But the highway is clogged up with billboards and you can't always find the highway through the signage.

Freelancing is great. If you can do that. I freelance but do not find the Internet useful in this. No one ever found my resume online except those who came to spam my email. So, not exceptionally useful.

These days I think the best way for a company/ business to use the Internet is to give information about themselves, offer sales/ coupons and such. But, don't hope people will find you. Bring the people to your site. Offer the link on business cards, flyers, and so on. The Internet can be information storage. The highway is just a traffic jam now.

Blog Around the World

Alas, this isn't gonna be just a white pages for bloggers. We are gonna have fun over here. I plan on having guest bloggers, selecting a state/country and it's bloggers to feature daily just to ram traffic through your sites, and starting next week I will spotlight and interview a particular blogger. And no questions like "where do you see yourself in five years" will be asked. Blech ick. If you want to be included in the listing or individually spotlighted at some point, go to your state/country of residence and sign in. I'll link you up.

Professional Newbies

I'm getting a little irked with "professional" bloggers who don't know a damn thing about writing, maintaining or creating a blog. Try using a dictionary if you want anyone to take you seriously. Don't know how to fix an error on your template? Then do not call yourself a professional blogger until you can load a new template and make it work.

Learn some CSS and HTML code, call it XHTML if you like. Learn how to spell basic words like "a lot"( it is not one word). Learn how to use the [shift] key so you can capitalize proper names for things and people.

Far too many money-making, SEO and topical bloggers label themselves professional without knowing anything more than how to type. Being able to type does not make you a competent blogger. Some of them would not even rate amateur.

I think there should be an official Dust Bunny Award for Professional Boggers. People who type a blog proclaiming themselves professional, experts.

Maybe I'm being a little hard on them. But, they make it beyond silly to proclaim themselves professionals while I can find 3 spelling mistakes (or typos) in their most recent post. Can't we get a browser feature that closes these kind of blogs just as it does the pop up windows? Can't we be spared from the Professional Boggers?

Are you Timid about Moderating Comments?

What About Blog is posting about comment moderation. Not about spam comments but those who post something negative, mean or abusive. Sure there is freedom of speech, on paper. On your own blog you should be the one to draw the line. Debate about a topic is one thing. Would you accept a comment that is not constructive but just obnoxious? It would be different if your blog was about debate, arguments and so on. That kind of blog pulls out arguments from the readers.

In the case of my own blog I do not accept obnoxious comments. Why should I? This is my blog, my little web empire. I don't have to be excessively fair or nice to someone who comes and attacks me. I moderate the junk comments (those posting for the sake of sticking me with their link and nothing else) and I also have no guilt about moderating aggressive and obnoxious comments.

I seldom get such comments but there have been a few over the years I have been here. I used to have a regular reader who enjoyed a sarcastic witty banter. That was fun, once we both understood that was what it was. I miss HappyandBlue and wish he would show up again, surprise me. :) I check his old blog links now and then but he is never there.

Anyway, do you feel obligated to post every negative comment? Where do you draw the line on which comments you accept and which you do not? If you do post them all is it because you have that idea that nice girls never say no? Maybe that is something you should rethink. After all, it's your blog, you are in charge.

NaComLeavMo

NaComLeavMo--National Comment Leaving Month (the national refers to wherever you are reading) from May 25th to June 25th. A full month of intense comment leaving. Leave 5 comments a day and return one comment a day for the month.

Was a nice plan. I just found it too late to join up. But left a comment on the post and she wrote back. Tomorrow she is taking votes on whether it should start again this coming month. Leave your comments too, if you'd like to get in on NaComLeavMo. I will.
